Subsequent legal marriages or civil partnerships

You only need OneSpirit’s letters of support for the first legal ceremony you hold in each of the four categories

• Mixed-sex marriage
• Same-sex marriage
• Mixed sex-civil partnership
• Same-sex civil partnership

Once you have been authorised in a category, NRS holds your details on file for further ceremonies in that same category. This applies to ministers resident in Scotland. If you live elsewhere, OneSpirit’s support is given one ceremony at a time: do not apply directly to NRS for a further ceremony; come back to OneSpirit for fresh letters of support each time.

For every ceremony with a legal element, you must email NRS Combined Registration Services at crs@nrscotland.gov.uk requesting temporary authorisation. Include:

• The full legal names of the couple
• The location of the ceremony
• The date and time of the ceremony
• A note that you have been authorised previously, as a OneSpirit minister, in this category.

Your application must be made no more than three months before the ceremony and no less than 29 days before it. Sending it at around the same time as the couple send their own forms helps the two offices match the paperwork.
